Whitney Horrocks
Instructor
Whitney Horrocks is the founder and owner of Smartest Artist Studio, celebrating five successful years of inspiring young artists. A former elementary and junior high art educator, Whitney brings over a decade of teaching experience from both Utah public schools and private instruction. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing and maintains an active studio practice, exhibiting her work in galleries throughout Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah. Whitney is passionate about nurturing creativity, technical skill, and confidence in young artists, blending her professional expertise with a lifelong love of art-making.

PreK, Kinder, & 1st grade Art Program Overview Unlocking Creativity Through Core Art Foundations Our Pre-K, Kinder, & 1st grade Art Program is designed to foster creativity and build essential skills through a sequential and cyclical curriculum. By progressively exploring the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, students not only learn art techniques but also develop a deep appreciation for art history. Here's what our young artists will explore: Foundational Concepts: Dive into the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to create visually compelling pieces. Drawing Skills: From observational and perspective drawing to life and figure sketches, students refine their ability to represent the world around them. Students will explore a diverse range of dry media, including graphite, oil pastels, chalk pastels, charcoal, and ink. Composition and Color: Learn the intricate concepts of 2D composition and color theory to enhance artistic expression. Painting Techniques: Experiment with various media such as acrylics, watercolors, and tempera, learning manipulation techniques that bring ideas to life. Art History: Travel through time exploring influential artists, both historical and contemporary, to understand their impact on the art world and society. Authentic Assessment: Engage in assessments that reflect real-world art critique, helping students evaluate and elevate their art. Personal Expression: Encourage self-expressive processes that allow students to communicate personal meaning and narratives through their artworks. Class Experience This ongoing class seamlessly extends our Pre-K, Kinder, & 1st grade Art Program, continuing from summer into the school year and cycling back each season. It provides a consistent, year-round art education journey for students. Jump in anytime! Class Requirements Age Requirement: Artists must be at least 4 years old to enroll in PreK-1st classes. Bathroom Independence: Children must be fully independent in using the bathroom to attend classes without adult supervision. If a child requires assistance in the bathroom, a parent or guardian must be present during the class.
