I interned at a non-profit agency where I experienced a life changing opportunity. As an advocate, I provided a number of different services to survivors and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Some tasks I have completed over the course of my internship are providing crisis counseling to women on the 24 hour emergency hotline, meeting program participants and providing support and counseling, assisting women and children in the safe house shelter, planning meetings for an event that spreads awareness about sexual assault, and leading childcare art therapy groups for children who have survived domestic violence and sexual assault. I have collaborated with other University's and ran tables and community functions. I enjoy going out into the community and spreading awareness, education, and building new relationships with surrounding networks. I have built a network of community resources and familiarized myself with local agencies and organizations. Networking has become a strength I have gained while working there. I have advocated on behalf of program participants to local hospitals, police force, and counseling centers. I had the privilege to work with adolescents in local high schools and young adults at local colleges. I led multiple dating violence and healthy relationships presentations. I also handled the secretary area and have administrative experience. My tasks often included answering multiple phone lines, organizing schedules, setting meetings, reviewing grants, budgeting and assisting in any necessary tasks. I have worked both behind the scenes in an organization, with clients one on one, and with a team.
