Since I was 13 I have been working with the youth population, from all different backgrounds. I have spent time working with children from Honduras, South Africa and all over the United States. I have spent time as a day camp and an overnight counselor, as well as a part-time and a full time nanny. I have worked in classrooms as a tutor, as well as taught swim lessons and am a certified lifeguard. However my most recent job is the job I have enjoyed the most. Over the past year I have been a Direct Care Giver to a 12-year-old, non-verbal autistic boy. It was my responsibility to help him with his homework as well as working on his life skills. During our times together we played outside, went swimming and practiced interacting in social settings. I was also responsible for coordinating with his parents on weekly and long term goals. Although this was not my first time working with children with special needs, it was during this job, that I fully recognized that I wanted to make a career working in this field. Because of this, I am now applying to graduate schools to obtain my masters in Special Education. I believe that working with special needs children is my calling!
