I completed a master's at Carnegie Mellon last year and am freelancing in Pittsburgh this year, which means that I work for a number of orchestras within the area and run my own small business teaching privately. I'm looking for both consistent and flexible work. For two summers I worked as a counselor (PCA) for 1-2 campers at a time, at day and overnight camps for the Autism Society of MN. Last summer and over the holidays season, I was employed as a 24-hour direct support staff doing adult foster care, where I was responsible for planning activities, supervising and teaching residents as they do chores and learn how to cook, documentation, conducting safety drills, behavioral support, transportation and medication administration. I believe that all human life is valuable no matter what skills may or may not be readily apparent. Every person deserves respect, love, and has the ability to teach and enrich those around them. My time working with individuals with autism and interacting with friends who struggle with psychological disorders has consistently challenged the way I see the world around me and has offered perspective about what is truly important in life. People with disabilities are often very honest, kind and find great happiness in the small things. I have enjoyed the ability to build relationships and watch growth happen. I have long-term experience babysitting infants and preschool age children, 3-4 and have worked as a camp counselor at music camps for middle school-high school age. I have taught private violin lessons to students ranging in age from 4-50 for eight years, worked as a classroom teacher for the public school district, and have completed two years of pedagogy training, with an emphasis on child development. I have two brothers, one is six years my junior and have babysat off when asked or referred since middle school. I love kids, and people in general, regardless of whether they have developed normally or struggle with disabilities. I am patient, flexible, easy going, discerning, innovative, responsible and nice, but no nonsense when it comes to misbehavior. I have experience with almost every age group and people from many different walks of life. If I sound like I might be what you're looking for let's talk!
