I grew up in a medical family with a father who was a physician and a mother who was a registered nurse. As a young girl, I accompanied my father to high school football and hockey games and would help him tape/bandage limbs and suture or "butterfly" lacerations. I interned as an orderly in an operating room while in college and have always been the "go to person" when there is a medical situation and there is no certified person immediately present. My former husband was struck by lightning and suffered catastrophic injuries from which he recovered to some degree. While he was in ICU for 38 days and then rehab for 15 weeks I helped his caregivers clean his feeding tubes, perform tracheal suctions and tend to his catheter and hygiene. All of these experiences have given me gratification and a sense of satisfaction knowing that my actions have helped another person feel better, safer and comfortable.
