I have been a part of the special needs community for 13 years. My youngest sister has Down syndrome and although limited in many ways, she has the biggest heart and best "social IQ" of anyone I know. I have served as a volunteer buddy (1:1) at a summer camp for special needs kids and adults. Another summer I worked as a counselor at a local day camp for SN kids which my sister attended. Both experiences taught me that no matter what the limitations, kids just want to be kids. They want to have fun and enjoy life. They want to be loved and respected for who they are and not necessarily what they can accomplish. I am passionate about this community because they deserve to be seen and heard and celebrated just as they are! Working closely with special kids has inspired me to pursue a career in physical therapy. I hope I have many more opportunities to continue serving and working together in the special needs community.
