For several years, I have volunteered and worked for families and individuals with special needs. During the summer, I worked at a Cerebral Palsy camp, while I was in college. This position involved: feeding, bathing, toileting, and transfers. Plus, I assisted with daily therapy and outdoor activities. Later, I worked as a live-in caregiver for a quadriplegic man. He received total care as he was unable to move from the neck down. More recently, I assisted a young man with Angelman Syndrome. Most of my care for him was in the evenings in his family's home. This type of care was similar to the care provided at C. P. camp mentioned above. I also transported him in a wheelchair for outings and daycare. At home, he used a walker with my assistance. Lastly, my brother has Multiple Sclerosis. Over the past 2 years, he has lost most of his mobility. So, he requires a lot of assistance. When I am in town, I performed a lot of the duties for his care. So, I feel a lot of empathy for those families who have loved ones with special needs. Plus, I can't express the amount of love and joy I have received from those whom I have cared for.
