I have spent the last 5 years working in a special needs school in Ireland, working with children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, adhd and ocd. I mostly cared for children from ages 4-8 and worked alongside special needs teachers. My main roles included: Ensuring the well being and happiness of children throughout the day i.e. giving them enough movement breaks from schoolwork and being aware of any triggers of sensory overload. Toilet care and training. Working on fine and gross motor skills. Feeding Keeping a regular and familiar schedule Working with children with special needs has been the most fulfilling career I have ever done. I genuinely feel like I learn much more from them than the other way around! After spending 10 years as a hairstylist ( which can be very convenient for a child with sensory sensitivities that doesn't like going to the hair salon!)I feel that caring for people with special needs is my true calling and I thoroughly enjoy it.
