About who needs care: Retired professional disability self advocate with cerebral palsy lost her husband who was her primary care provider 24/7. She has Highland Valley Elder services providing 40+ hours of care but has no weekend coverage (yet!). Primarily she needs help getting dressed and using the bathroom in the morning, she needs help preparing meals, and then needs help undressing and getting ready for bed. Occasionally she'll need assistance with a shower on the weekend if she hasn't been assisted by her regular weekday PCA. She now lives by herself in a condo in Amherst, and her neighbors have provided some meals and company but no one living there is physically able to help her get dressed or go to the bathroom. About the care needs: She is a very fun loving independent woman and regularly goes to physical therapy to maintain as much strength and agility as possible. She is easy going, sociable and active in the community. She has a really nice electric scooter so she can go out on her own and drive her self to the bus and to nearby shops, banks and restaurants. She does need help getting in and out of the scooter and/or walker but is able to stand up with some assistance so it doesn't require lifting her up. The ideal caregiver is good at listening and letting her take the lead as to what she needs and when. Once a rapport is established, as long as the caregiver is reliable and trustworthy, she will be responsive and appreciative. Services needed include: feeding, and bathing / dressing.
