This Just In: Google’s Report on 2016’s Back To School Trends

Think With Google, the internet company’s data driven digital marketing site, recently published their findings as to what the hottest trends are this back to school season. Data for this report is compiled of Google searches, as well as Youtube viewers’ behavior and preferences.

Here’s what they discovered:

  • Parents are starting back to school shopping earlier than previous years. Google reports that Back To School searches saw an unprecedented spike around July 11th, a week earlier than last year.

  • Parents are mainly searching and shopping on mobile devices
  • The most popular brand for school supplies this year is Yoobi, an office supply company who, for every item you purchase, donates an item to a classroom in need within the U.S
  • Victoria’s Secret PINK is the most popularly searched backpack brand of the year, while Birkenstock maintains its stronghold as the most searched shoe brand for the past 3 years running!

  • Depending on what part of the country you’re from, you may be looking for a ‘bookbag’ instead of a ‘backpack’. Google noted that the word bookbag is especially popular in the mid east-coast region.
  • Kids (and parents) are checking out ‘Back To School’ themed Youtube Videos’ 70% more than last year. Of these, dorm room decorating tips and DIY were the most popular.

You can check out the full report here. Google makes note that there is a Back to School ‘second wave’ in January, when students stock up on supplies after their winter recess. They will be publishing a similar report around that time.
