Well, the verdict is in. The Social Security Administration released the top baby names of 2016, and we have to admit there are a couple old favorites but also a few new surprises!

Topping the list of most popular baby names for the third year in a row: Noah, for boys, and Emma, for girls. Liam and Olivia weren’t far behind the top tried-and-true names, and have held the No. 2 spot since 2014.

Finishing out the top five names for boys are William at No. 3, Mason at No. 4, and James at No. 5. For girls, familiar names from 2015 like Ava, Sophia, and Isabella shuffled around the top five but held on strong for 2016 at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5, respectively.

There are a couple of pop culture name jumps to note. The name Kehlani, likely inspired by Grammy-nominated singer Kehlani Parrish, jumped from 3,359 in 2015 to 872 in 2016. Kylo, a popular character from the 2015 film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” moved from No. 3,269 in 2015 to 902 in 2016. We’ll have to wait and see where these names land next year!

Each year, the Social Security Administration releases its list of the top 10 baby names for both males and females. The data is based on information collected by the agency when parents apply for a Social Security number on behalf of their child at birth. The agency, which tracks names dating back to the late 1800s, first distributed a list of the most popular names in 1998.
