Some Facts to Know Before Buying a Pit Bull

Many people attest that the pit bull is a great family companion yet others are of the opinion that it should be banned. The fact is that most pit bulls, like all other dogs, are wonderful pets that love people and are great with kids.

If you’re thinking about getting a red nose or blue nose pitbull, it is imperative that you do your research. Don’t just buy a pit bull through the local classifieds or on the corner as this is risky. It is important that you have a good talk with the breeder about your experiences and expectations for this hybrid. Find out about the breeder’s health clearances and, if possible, try and meet both the pit bull puppy’s parents.

There are a lot of breeders so it’s important that you be proactive and educated on the hybrid when introducing it into your home.

Pedigree

It origin and pedigree of the pit bull is not entirely clear. It is, however, believed to carry the DNA of the Staffordshire Terrier or Bull Terrier. It is a mix of more than one breed with a large head. It is considered more of a description of a group of breed than a breed in itself.

The indiscriminate breeding of the blue nose and red nose pitbull has been rather controversial in a number of US cities, with many of them attempting to ban these dogs as a result of reports of aggressive behavior. It is important to note that good breeders care about the dogs and make sure that both the dog’s parents have good temperaments.

Diet/Food

As a result of its size and athleticism, it is important to feed the red nose or blue nose pitbull well. It’s best to feed it with a high-quality diet specially formulated for dogs that are active. Dry kibble is crucial as it prevents bad breath, gum disease, premature tooth loss, plaque buildup, and tooth decay.

Training

Pit bulls need an owner who is assertive, one who insists on being the leader in the home. Owners who are laid back and neglectful when it comes to obedience training should reconsider getting a pit bull. These dogs have a need of being the prime entity in the home and in the absence of a strong leader, the owners and family will not have the desired experience.

Pit bull training should be done in a way that’s positive. Techniques that are physically abusive or harsh will only elicit the dog’s instinct to protect itself. After all, dogs have the same inherent fight or flight instincts that humans do. Positive training that features rewards such as treats or praise are the most effective for the blue nose and red nose pitbull.

Exercise requirements

Pit bulls have a lot of energy and therefore require lots of exercise to keep them happy and maintain their good health. These dogs will happily run through the yard or neighborhood chasing varmints or go hiking in the mountains with you. With proper stimulation and exercise, you are sure to have a happy, healthy dog that your family can enjoy for years.
