ALERT: Mold Prompts Kroger to Recall Purified Water for Babies

Attention parents and caregivers: If you buy groceries at Kroger, it’s time to check your pantries!

The grocery chain, in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, issued a recall on Dec. 6 for their Comforts FOR BABY Purified Water with added fluoride after consumers complained of mold contamination. Kroger tested samples of the liquid, typically used in formula and baby cereal, and confirmed the fungus was present.

The supermarket retailer said the mold inside the 1-gallon plastic jugs may not be visible to the naked eye, and they’re advising anyone who bought the water to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The bottles were sold exclusively at Kroger affiliate stores between April 26, 2017, and Oct. 10, 2017, with the UPC code 041260375972. The recall spans the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

According to the FDA, exposure to mold can trigger allergic reactions for certain people — even those without allergies — as well as cause irritation the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs, even in people who aren’t allergic to them. Mold exposure can be especially compromising for infants, small children, and those with HIV and other immune-related diseases.
