When are kids too old to sleep with a stuffed animal friend?
My daughter's 8, and she has a special stuffed bear that's been in her bed with her since she was a baby. I'm okay with it because it helps her sleep and makes her happy, but my husband wonders if she's getting too old for the bear. What do you think?
Never. My 12 year old sleeps with a bear. It's comforting. If she takes it to college with her, who cares??
I am 24 and sleep with a stuffed animal! My Grandma had been sleeping with home made dolls and stuffed animals all her life and she's the most role model type of person Ive ever known, she's amazing. Nothing to worry about ♥️
Many studies suggest that any kind of comfort object should be encouraged for kids until they feel like they don't want it anymore. An 8 year old will not have developed full emotional maturity and stability until late high school or college. The time she starts itching to move out will be a beginning indicator that she is close finishing the development of her emotional maturity. Until that point a comfort object may help illuminate or dull emotional out bursts. Keeping a child more stable by giving her an outlet and comfort when she is struggling to use the proper self coping tools to sooth herself. Taking the object away that is providing her this comfort creates a level of resentment and distrust. Also can psychologically play a roll in training her to be emotionally detached down the road. Personally, if it were my child I would be buying several identical bears to replace that one for the event that bear was ever lost or was falling apart.
I don't think she's too old for a stuffed animal at all. All kids grow and mature in their own time and she will stop sleeping with it when she is ready. She may always have it on her bed and that's ok too. People of all ages love stuffed animals.
My child is 12 and still has several stuffed animals on her bed. I think that stuffed animals give children and some adults a level of comfort and there's never a definite age that we shouldn't have them.
my little sister sleeps with her stuffed frog shes 13 she had it as long as i can remember and i dont think sh will give it up anytime soon and it helps her so idk if there really is a good age to not sleep with stuffed animals
I think that a stuffed animal is not a very big deal. If it makes her more comfortable I feel there is no need to take it away. She is still young.
I don't think shes getting old enough for the stuffed animal, I think its a comfort factor for her, in my opinion shes fine.
I'm almost 27 and I have a beloved sock monkey that, on rare occasions, I'll snuggle with for comfort. If she insisted on taking the toy everywhere, that could be a concern. But since she simply sleeps with it, there really is no issue. Taking the bear away would cause unnecessary trauma and stress. If nothing negative has arisen from her habit, let it be.
Personally, I don't think children get too old to sleep with stuffed animals. As they get older, that bear is a symbol of consistency, and comfort. At least in my eyes.
My son is 11 he has a stuffed dog he’s got adhd it helps so I’m fine do people can have toys even when there old no matter what other people think
I’m 21 and in college and honestly, I’ve got a stuffed mountain lion that I sleep with. From what I’ve found, it helps reduce stress during finals week and any other time constraints that pop up during the semester. It’s a helpful way of reducing stress. Plus, you’re never too old to sleep with one!!!
I'm 17, and I still sleep with a stuffed animal.
I agree that the stuffed animal is nothing to worry about. I had several friends in college that still displayed stuffed animals on their dorm beds and no one thought less of them. Childhood is such a precious time in our lives and I would encourage you to let your child make the most of it as long as he/she would like.
If it comforts her, it's fine. IMHO there is no "too old" for stuffed animals
