In 1992, I was an overnight care coordinator for a Group Home in Asheboro, NC. I was responsible for the safety and well-being of 14 developmentally disabled residents between the ages of 17 and 54. My duties included but were not limited to: safety checks after residents had gone to sleep for the night, light housekeeping, distributing evening and morning medicines, cooking meals and assisting residents who needed help with daily dressing and grooming, though not bathing or full-body lifting, and I would not feel comfortable with that aspect of care. I also helped residents who wished to work on crafts or projects and took the group on outings to local events and fairs. The residents I assisted were from a broad spectrum - ranging from cerebral palsy, hearing and speech difficulties, Down's syndrome and Schizophrenia. The job required organizational, record-keeping and mild physical abilities as well as compassion, empathy, grace under pressure and a sense of humor.
