As stated before, I am a dually certified substitute teacher in the areas of Elementary Education/Early Childhood. I have had numerous opportunities to be in special needs classrooms from K-4, handicapped children, some autism, and so on. I was a special education teacher (sub) for Augusta Circle for one month right before Christmas this last school year. A teacher there gave me one of the best compliments. She stated that she no longer had to close her classroom door (they like the doors open at that school) because the children were not so noisy anymore:) I was very pleased to hear that. Some of the children had anger issues and they no longer had quite so many "tantrums". I tried to have a variety of activities for them to do, such as learning their alphabet, numbers, some sounds of the letters (they were lower functioning) colors, and even some money. I did color sheets to go along with the country we were learning about, i. e. Canada-red Maple leaf, a movie that corresponded to Canada (not just for fun type movies but educational movies) and other activities. I enjoyed my time there with the children. If you have any questions regarding my background with children, please feel free to e-mail me with those. (The years of experience are with children in general; I am not specifying special needs verses typical). Sincerely, Michelle
