I have worked with children who have had severe food allergies to so many foods, that they required medical food, recording of each calorie they ate, foods the children around them ate, and supervision of public areas to make sure they didn't inhale a cheese or nut particle. My work with one child with Down Syndrome resulted in me marrying the boy's oldest brother. I cared for Michael from age 3-6, when his brother and I moved from Louisiana to Washington. I grew up with ADD, and siblings with ADHD. We drove our parents and nannies nuts, and as a nanny, I've worked with it as well. I've worked with diagnosed, officially, undiagnosed, and wrongly diagnosed as ADHD. Each child is treated as they need to be, with homework, chores, finishing meals or tasks, and everything is broken up within their attention span, increasing each week by 2 minutes, until the routine is there that they will begin to find comfort in. In high school, I had the responsibility of being a care-taker for a student my age, as she and her day-nurse in the school didn't get along, at all. She was wheel-chair bound. I pushed her to and from classes, helped her use the rest room, helped her get things from her locker, and change her into gym clothes for gym class, as required for physical therapy within the school. I've shared teaching duties in a classroom that had a couple of 3 and 4-year-olds with Asperger's and Autism. My experience is limited.
