I have a lot of experience with children with Down syndrome. I babysat a 15-year-old boy with Down syndrome, along with his two younger sisters (7 and 9) before and after school, two years ago. I was responsible for getting the kids ready for school, driving the girls to elementary school and then waiting for the boy's bus. I also got the kids off of their buses after my classes, and started their homework and got them snacks, or dinner, depending on the time their mother was coming home. I would have continued babysitting for them, but they moved. :( I am very flexible and have always been willing to stay late for any of the families that I babysit for. I also love to make up fun games for the kids or take them on trips for frozen yogurt or to the park on nice days. The boy's favorite food was donuts, so whenever we dropped off his sister at school and had extra time to kill, we would run to Dunkin Donuts. I had taken on that babysitting job, because I love working with kids with special needs. Even when it was 6:30 in the morning and I had been up all night writing a paper for school, nothing made me happier than going and seeing the boy who was always in a great mood. Especially after working with him, I have decided that I want to work more with people with special needs and would love to find another job like that one, now closer to home.
