I worked with people with special needs by starting out teaching gymnastics in Butte, Montana, then worked as a weekend technician in St. Paul, Mn. in 1986, Billings, Mt. in 1988, and group home manager in 1991 to 1993. In 1995 my own son was born with special needs and I cared for him until 1998 and took a job as another group home manager. (My son was in daycare.) In 1999 I worked with physically disabled in their homes and they were primarily senior citizens. My work experience has ranged from high functioning individuals to very low functioning. It is a very challenging field, but also very rewarding! My son was born with a rare genetic disease called Tuberous Sclerosis and has had a huge impact on our family, but we would not trade him for the world!
