For about a year in 2009, I worked in a group home for adults with mental disabilities. It was challenging, fun, and demanding. This position nurtured my compassion and empathy, kept me on my toes, and tested my patience at times. Not long after, my 2-year-old nephew was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and my perspective on people with special needs shifted dramatically. I moved back to the town where he lived to be an active part of his life and help my sister cope with the daily struggles of caring for a child with autism. He is now 7 years old and in first grade. The last 5 years have been an incredible journey. I have done extensive research on ASD and have loved watching my nephew grow, develop, progress, and mature. Raising a child with autism or other special needs is not easy. But it is SO worth it. Many times I have shed tears of sadness and frustration while watching my nephew struggle to express himself or complete tasks that come so naturally to other children. But I have shed more tears of joy for the incredible progress he's made and the amazing personality he has. I would love to help your family care for your special needs child!
