Hi there! Thank you for looking at my page. First, let me just say that I am not currently available for long-term care and may have limited availability beginning in the next month or two. I want to say that up front because I know the lack of consistency could be an issue for some individuals. This post is more for occasional care giving. Thanks! My experience with people with special needs began over 20 years ago, when I began volunteering in the special education classroom at my elementary school. Little did I know, a couple of years later, I would have a brother with Down syndrome and on the autistic spectrum. I continued volunteering in the special education classes for the duration of my time in school, and also cared often for my brother at home. To better attend his needs, I went to conventions, trainings, talks, CPR and first aid classes, IEP meetings, took classes on child development and more. In college, I did a fundraising activity for special Olympics, and continued working with children. I went on to graduate school, and afterwards was employed as an In-Home Trainer working to aid adults with disabilities to achieve their own educational and social goals. I still continue to fly home to care for my brother when my parents go out of town.
