I have been a care giver of a boy, now man, with Down Syndrome for 15 years but never professionally. When my son first came to live with me, he was a bit barbaric. This is attributed to his young life being unsupervised by his single alcohol and drug addicted single mother in the dangerous environment of Cincinnati/Kentucky slums. I was intimidated but hopeful. Helpful but making sure he knew he wasn't helpless. I was caring all the while not having a clue what to care for. He didn't talk but moaned and growled. He could be starving to death or bit by a scorpion and you would never know. I was frazzled and confused on how to help him, while he was frustrated to the point of tantrums, that I didn't know what hes thinking. He was aggressive, vulgar, and acted like a baby all while being the biggest Horror film fan ever. However, he did extraordinary things that gave me a glimpse into his potential. Along with not allowing him to be treated differently, I enrolled him in programs and high school. Through the tears of joy, I found out at his graduation ceremony, how popular he was. He is the funniest, most honest, chivalrous, clever person I have ever known. I'm lucky to be able to see it.
