I am inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, nature, inquiry, play and place based learning . I strongly believe in the importance of strong relationships and attachment and attunement in early childhood. I have a graduate degree with specialties in literacy and language development and use songs, stories and games to support literacy skills. I like being outside, doing arts, crafts, science, exploring and playing. I can set and maintain firm boundaries but in a gentle and supportive way. I am a friendly and flexible person and can adapt to your house rules and preference for communication. I would prefer a low tech environment and prefer not to use devices with children for entertainment with an exception for adaptive and assistive technology. I have experience working with children of various needs and abilities. I love to cook and garden and am happy to help with light housework and errands. I am CPR/First aid certification and a licensed B-K teacher.
Jennifer has been a part of our lives since our now 6-year old was 2.5. We truly could not have found a better caregiver. She is not only attentive and all the things you want in someone who spends time with your kid, but also has an advanced degree in early childhood education. We first met her as a teacher at a Reggio-inspired, outdoor school in Chapel Hill. Her play and exploration-based teaching philosophy really compliments our parenting-style for our energetic, non-stop kiddo. She encourages curiosity, creativity, and exploration in everything she does with the kids. Whether painting outside on giant scraps of cardboard, (safely!) hammering nails into an old stump, exploring nature, making homemade pizzas from scratch (even the sauce and dough!) , or simply embracing the joy of free play, she makes everyday activities learning opportunities. My kid adores and trusts her. He had a tough transition when he started outdoor school when Jennifer was his teacher. She sat with him and helped him work through his feelings calmly and patiently instead of telling him things like “big boys don’t cry”. She’s flexible, easy going, responsive, and (I can’t stress this enough) DEPENDABLE. If you’re looking for someone who is deeply invested in helping kids grow to be confident and curious I could not suggest someone better.
