I have a special needs sister and had to help take care of her for a while now and I gained a lot of patience in that department. Along with that I have helped my father coach a special needs soccer team for about 7 years now and have come across many different disabilities and how to work with them. I learned a lot on how to interact with children with certain needs and have grown to love working with them. I also took a class in high school where I was a mentor for a year to a special needs kid and had to be interviewed to get in and I got in due to my experience. In that class, we had to learn about how to build friendships and a bridge to help motivate the kids to go out and have fun. We learned how to create a safe place at school for them and bring awareness to their different disabilities and how it would affect us by doing weekly lunch activities. Being around and helping these kids is my passion and a reward in itself. Teaching special needs was my original major for college because it was something I love. I think anyone who has the patience for these kids, has a gift and knows that there is more to these kids than their disabilities. They are special in their own way.
