I haven't had a paid job working with children with special needs, but I have been working with children with special needs in school since elementary school. I myself grew up having an IEP, so I was in special needs classes as well as "normal" classes. I always found enjoyment in helping my peers with more needs than I had, and because I was not just working with them, but also one of them, I have a special set of skills and point of view I can bring to the table when working with your child.
