From 2019 until 2023 I cared for three of my family members. My father, age 86, had a broken hip and that was how I began caring for the elderly. He also had dementia and had a difficult time adjusting to his new physical condition. He deteriorated and passed away after a year. My mother, 88, had been deteriorating while my father was declining. She developed Alzheimer's and had all of the issues connected to that. After she passed away, we stepped in to help my wife's sister, age 81, who had congestive heart failure and dementia. Many years before, I worked for a company that assisted traumatic brain injured individuals and truly made a connection with them while helping them and taking them to their appointments. My belief is that a caregiver should attend to the needs of the client, whether it is wiping bottoms or cooking meals. I found that caring for people and making their lives easier was extremely gratifying.
