I'm 18, and a Freshman at UNT in Denton TX. I am majoring in Occupational Therapy in hopes to work in the pediatric field eventually. I have 2+ years of working with special needs children. I volunteer at a therapeutic horseback riding center. We work with people with all types of physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities on and around horses. We work on motor and verbal skills and teach them to become one with the horse, as well as help learn how to accomplish every day activities on their own. At request we also offer Hippo-therapy which is outpatient physical and occupational therapy to children and adults with movement dysfunction. Disabilities that benefit from Hippo-therapy include (but are not limited to) cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis. Hippo-therapy is using equine movement as a treatment strategy. In order to volunteer at the center, I had to go through extensive training, and have become very knowledgeable with different disabilities that people are faced with.
