I've successfully completed the Collaborative Autism Training and Support Program which is a 2 semester program with in class lectures on various aspects of autism. Additionally, I was paired up with two different kids with autism for two different semesters. The first semester I worked with a 12-year-old boy with autism in his home. I was primarily there to help him socialize and push himself to explore areas outside his comfort zone. The second semester I worked in a special needs classroom where I primarily worked with a 6-year-old relatively non-verbal boy with autism. I helped him with his classroom assignments and used a PECS board to get him to communicate what he wanted to eat for lunch and snack. Occasionally, I acted as a teachers aid to kids with down syndrome, autism, and other developmental delays. I am comfortable working with kids with problem behaviors such as tantrums and pinching and biting.
