About who needs care: mary is wheelchair bound after experiencing a stroke that affected the left side of her body on Easter 2021. mary is still able to walk and operate independently with her walker for short distances, but needs help with getting dressed in the morning and after using the bathroom. mary is originally born in Ireland and moved to the US at 21. she has three children (who lives in the home with her). mary is a very experienced seamstress, and although she struggles to use her left hand, is still able to partake in this past time. she is also a very good teacher and appreciates being able to pass on her knowledge and skills to others who are willing to learn! mary is a very active woman and likes running errands, visiting the mall, or stores she also enjoys going to consignment galleries and visiting her son in Arlington. Mary likes to keep a very tidy home, but Evelyn employs cleaners every other week so in home cleaning is not extensive. Mary also likes to cook and regularly makes her own pasta sauce (with assistance). despite her age, mary has all her "marbles" as she would say. she can be a bit bossy and has increased emotional sensitivity since her stroke, but overall she's a lovely woman who just struggles with her dependence on others. Mary also sees a counselor once a week to address symptoms of depression and anxiety that have worsened since the stroke. Evelyn likes to keep Mary active and moving so she is currently in a physical therapy (PT) "maintenance" program that allows her to work with a physical therapist twice a week to keep the progress she made while being enrolled in PT last year. The PT provides a home care plan as well with exercises that Mary's caregivers are expected to help her with throughout each day. Additionally, Mary's caregivers are in charge of making her meals throughout the day and making sure she eats and drinks enough throughout the day. Mary complains of not having much of an appetite since her stroke and she is also very picky about what foods she likes and how they should be prepared. mary also has trouble swallowing and foods must be cut small so she won't choke. About the care needs: mary gets along best with caregivers who are quick learners and has common sense. mary is very organized and likes to get things done as soon as possible and does well with caregivers who can help her with simple technological tasks that may confuse her (regarding use of the TV, her phone, the Internet, etc.) someone who likes to go out and browse around stores or run small errands for fun would be a good fit for Mary. Mary also appreciates when her caregivers are able to help her with the daily crossword or a jigsaw puzzle. mary is a very avid gardener in the spring/summer and likes to go for strolls down the street when it's nice out! Mary would do well with a caregiver who is able to cook the basics: pasta, fried egg, potatoes, and is also willing to learn to cook new recipes with her. It's important that Mary has a caregiver who is intelligent, energetic, in good shape, and empowers her. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
