About who needs care: Dad (Sam 78) was a neurologist for many years. He was diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimers a couple years ago and has been on a treatment for the last year that has delayed some of the progression of the disease for a year. Generally he struggles with aphasia (trouble finding words) and has some short term memory challenges (learning new skills) , recently he has stopped driving as he can get disoriented. So far he can take care of his own basic needs, getting dressed, bathing, eating etc. and he can still do tasks like setting the table, cleaning dishes. He can usually track the conversation and can remember events from the last few days, weeks. His physical mobility is good. He walks a least half an hour a day outside and likes taking dance & exercise classes. Ideally we are looking for dad to have more stimulation. Hes been largely isolated in the house with Marie (his wife) since retirement/COVID in 2020. He does better on days he leaves the house and is around new people / places. We would love someone safe to accompany him to museums, walks, movies, talks, workshops, new lunch spots and maybe workout / dance classes. He is very extroverted and loves meeting new people, art, lively places, nature, dance, intellectual and new experiences. A perfect day may look like waking up, making his breakfast (which he still does) taking the dog out for a walk. Maybe going out for lunch and some kind of fun activity. Coming home to help Marie with dinner. About the care needs: Dad is very friendly, smart and kind. He would do well with someone who is gentle, caring and a good patient conversationalist who is able to give him time to get his his words out. A good fit would be someone who has their own interest in art, science, nature books etc. someone to give dad greater access to the world through their experiences and interests. Services needed include: transportation, and companionship.
