My 93-year-old mother-in-law lives with my husband and me. She enjoys weeding the garden and reading. She needs appointment transport and help due to falls and forgetfulness (medication, water intake, going for walks). We're concerned about leaving her alone, but also want time away. She dislikes others helping or forcing attention. It helps to prompt her to stay on routine while performing other tasks, like kitchen cleaning, telling stories (trash and laundry help also appreciated). Hopefully, time will increase her cooperation with someone else helping. She likes someone confident but adaptable to her preferences. Her hearing impairment requires patience. Sometimes she struggles to understand or process words and asks the same question. I will need more help in the fall when my husband returns to teaching because of my own illness.
