About who needs care: I am looking for a caregiver who can help care for my parents as part of a larger caregiving team, as well as help manage household tasks, errands, and the feeding of our family dog (Eddie). My mother (67) has ALS and is no longer able to speak, although she is still mentally sharp and communicates via text message and voice-to-text. She is 100% dependent on a feeding tube for hydration and caloric needs. She can no longer bathe herself independently and has minimal mobility. She is also wearing a BiPAP machine 23/24 hours a day. My mom is a retired physician and can supervise the refilling and administration of medications for my father, as well as the operation and maintenance of her feeding tube and the administration of her medication. My father (69) has Alzheimer's and is no longer able to drive. We're not sure how aware he is. He can feed himself (ice cream, sandwiches, etc.) and maintain his hygiene (although he needs some reminding); however, he needs help refilling his medication box and reminders to take his medication. About the care needs: We're looking for a caregiver who is discreet and understands that for both my mother and father, there is no better so they should not be pushing them to exert themselves or get out of the house. My mom is still mentally herself and doesn't need any enrichment activities as she has a large circle of friends with whom she is in contact regularly, she enjoys reading, watching the news and having time to herself. If she wants to get out of the house, she will let the caregiver know. However, because of her disease, she has lost much of her independence and needs help. My dad is happy to watch TV all day, and we have a community of friends and family who will take him out of the house to do things. There is no need to provide enrichment activities for my dad. The caregiver should be familiar with assisting adults who are suffering from diseases such as ALS, Parkinson's, etc. as well as Alzheimer's. A plus would be that they are familiar with feeding tubes. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
