Autumn Care: 5 Tips for Staying Healthy

When we think of autumn, falling leaves and orange sunsets spring to mind. Unfortunately, there is another trait we cannot shake – cold and flu season.

As the cold weather drives us inside, the constant proximity to others increases our chance of illness. To avoid getting sick and missing out on one of the most beautiful times of year, here are 5 tips for staying healthy this autumn.

1. Fruit and veg

A diet loaded with fruit and vegetables is one of the best ways to bolster your immune system and fend off illness. It is best to eat seasonal veg which, thankfully, are delicious in autumn. Seasonal autumn vegetables include pumpkin, winter squash, parsnips, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, figs and more.

Other ingredients that are said to boost the immune system due to their vitamin C or antioxidant content are ginger, citrus fruits, spinach, red bell peppers, garlic, turmeric and green tea.

2. Exercise

As the cold weather sets in, walks on the beach and outdoor swims are banished to our summer memories. While it can be difficult to get motivated, it is important to maintain regular exercise. If you can’t bring yourself to go outdoors, try indoor yoga, go to the gym or come up with an at-home workout routine.

Maintaining a healthy weight is another component in preventing illness.

3. Vitamin D

As the main source of vitamin D is sun exposure, it can be difficult to get the recommended intake during the colder months. You can bolster your intake with foods rich in the sunshine vitamin. These include fatty fishes such as salmon, tuna and sardines, egg yolks and cheddar cheese. Some foods, such as breakfast cereals and milk, are fortified with vitamin D, however, this depends on the brand.

You can also take vitamin D supplements. It is important to check with your doctor beforehand.

4. Rest

Getting adequate sleep and rest is vital for emotional and physical wellbeing. If you are not getting enough sleep, you are more likely to be run down which will make you more susceptible to illness. While getting cosy and plenty of rest is one of the perks of autumn, be sure to include the necessary amount of exercise and activity as well.

If you’re worried you don’t have enough time for rest, consider hiring a housekeeper and give yourself the time out for the spa or sauna trip that you desperately need.

5. Avoid stress

Being stressed will make you run down and, in turn, more prone to infection and illness. Thankfully, a few ways to manage stress are already on our list: getting enough rest, exercising regularly and eating well. Avoid stress triggers such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. You can help alleviate stress by talking to someone or keeping a diary. If you are feeling overwhelmed by stress, you should consult your doctor.
