Natural Body Lotion & Lip Balm Recipes

Many body lotion products on the market today contain a lot of chemical ingredients whilst their natural counterparts cost the earth. Solution: make your own homemade and natural moisturizers for you and your family this summer!

Below are two easy-to-make and wonderfully smelling lotion recipes. Why not get your children involved in helping you make them?

Natural Jasmine Body Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cups light olive oil
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup grated or chopped beeswax
  • 20 drops jasmine essential oil or 20 drops grapefruit essential oil

Directions:
Set a glass jar or measuring cup into a pot of simmering water. The water should reach about halfway up your container.
Chop or grate your beeswax. You can use a regular kitchen knife or cheese grater for this because the wax will melt off with hot water. Add the chopped wax, olive oil and coconut oil to your glass jar and stir to combine.

Let all ingredients melt together until the liquid is translucent.

Remove the jar from the hot water carefully, and set it on the counter to cool. Add essential oils after lotion is removed from heat.

Stir the mixture vigorously every 15 minutes so it cools evenly and doesn’t form any lumps. If lumps form, simply repeat the melting process and stir more often. It will take at least 30 minutes to cool and become opaque.

Once mixture is room temperature, you can seal the jar and store it as-is, or transfer the lotion to individual containers. Because there is no water in this recipe, you can store the lotion at in a cool dark place for up to 6-months. At that time the scents may begin to change.

Homemade Honey Lip Balm

High quality lip balm is hard to find. With so many brands available, it’s almost impossible to find an all-natural, good smelling, and moisturizing lip balm for a decent price. This recipe solves all your lip balm problems, and it makes enough so you can keep one in your car, at your desk, in the bathroom or wherever you like!

Added bonus: With all natural ingredients, you can feel good about putting it on your kids’ chapped lips. Plus, the smell of honey and grapefruit will give you an instant energy boost every time you apply.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup light olive oil
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup beeswax
  • 2 T honey
  • 10-20 drops grapefruit essential oil

Directions:
Set a glass measuring cup or a bowl with a pouring spout into a pot of simmering water. The water should come up to the middle of your container. The pouring spout is important for this recipe because you will be pouring the warm lip balm into containers before its solidified.

Chop or grate beeswax and add it to the glass measuring cup. Add in olive oil, coconut oil, and honey and stir to combine. Let all ingredients melt together until the mixture is liquefied. Carefully remove the glass measuring cup from the hot water and vigorously stir in essential oil.

Slowly pour lip balm into individual containers. Any extra can be stored in a bigger container for refills. Let the lip balms harden for 20-30 minutes at room temperature until they are opaque and solid to the touch. Store in a cool dark place for up to 6 months.
