Indoor Activities for Elderly People in Summer

Great activity ideas for hot days.

On hot summer days many elderly people prefer to stay in their home where they can take refuge from the heat. However, being cooped up all day because of the weather can lead to boredom. To prevent this, we have put together a list of summer activities to stay entertained indoors.

1. Enjoy a foot bath

Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer’s day than a cool foot bath. This refreshment is not only good for the feet, it also helps cool the whole body. Make this soothing foot bath part of the afternoon routine and then you can look forward to it all morning. Here is one suggestion for preparing a foot bath:

  • Fill your footbath or tub with cool water
  • Add 20cl of apple cider vinegar
  • Soak your feet for 15 to 30 minutes

You can mix this recipe up with ingredients such as Epsom salts or essential oils.

2. Take up old hobbies

Long summer days are perfect for resuming beloved activities. Do you love reading long books or writing letters to your friends and family? This is the perfect season for those hobbies. Crocheting and knitting are also fun in the summer. Whatever hobby you once enjoyed before it fell by the wayside, now is the opportunity to pick it back up again.

3. Learn a new language

When the weather turns oppressively warm, it can be difficult to keep the brain active. A great way to keep your mind switched on during the heat is by studying the vocabulary of a new language. Do you have holiday coming up? If so, turn your attention to the language of the country. Having a few words of Portuguese, Italian or whatever the language of your chosen destination is will make your trip much more enjoyable when you get there!

4. Make ice tea

There is nothing quite as refreshing as a cooling drink on hot summer days. So why not treat yourself to this pleasant sensation several times a day? In the evening, boil a pot of your favourite tea. Make it taste even fresher by adding mint or lemon. Let the drink cool overnight. The next morning, you can fill the room-temperature tea with ice-cold sparkling water. Add honey or sweetener if preferred and now your refreshing ice tea is ready.

5. Make photo albums

Have you been meaning to scour your photo collection and arrange the pictures in beautiful photo albums? Well, what better time to do it? Design each album individually with drawings and written memories from when the photos were taken. You can also stick small souvenirs in. While it seems like a million miles away, these albums will leave you armed with great Christmas gifts when the season rolls around.

6. Summer clean

Cleaning, tidying and arranging do not necessarily have to be confined to the spring. Keep a few summer days tucked away so you can tackle the home cleaning. Tidy clothes, papers, letters, souvenirs and any other organisation that you can manage.

If your home needs a deep clean, you can always look at hiring a cleaner or housekeeper to help you with the more strenuous tasks.
