No family ever wants to face deciding what hospice company to put a loved one with. When that decision came upon my sister and I, we were influenced to go with Guiding Light. I do not know about you, but I assume a hospice organization is meant to make a loved one feel comfortable on their last days here on earth. The one registered nurse we were assigned with Guiding Light, only came once a day for 30-45 minutes max. The rest of the 23 hours and 15 minutes were up to my sister and I, who had no experience whatsoever on hold to administer medication, facial cues, and how to understand this process. It was very stressful taking on this task with just us two. I assumed hospice would he there with us at least a few hours, but you will not get that with this company. Mind you the nurse they did assign us was very educated, showed an immense amount of empathy, and even attended our mother's funeral. I just wish she was with us longer than 30 minutes. I should also mention her oncologist, Dr. Gunaganti never visited or call to see how she was or if she needed anything.
The night my mother passed we were assigned a nurse "on call" which wasn't who we were used to to and she was rude, which is not something you expect from a company who should pride themselves in compassion. We were instructed to call her if she were to pass and she would take care of everything. When that happened it went straight to a full inbox voicemail. My family was wreck scrambling around figuring out what to do. Those last few moments with my mom were robbed from us due to this imbecile they hired and screwed up the one job she had. Guiding light assured us they fired her, but I still feel that I should voice our horrible experience to help other families avoid this company. I feel as human beings we deserve the upmost care on our last days and I feel we did not get that.

Sour grapes Lisa! Dr. Gunuganti did tell us he owned Guiding Light Hospice. 9 months ago, when my mother needed care, and from the time we visited his office, to the night she passed from Pancreatic cancer.Neither my mom or we (her family) worried about anything! They told us what to expect. They made sure we had everything BEFORE we needed it. They saw to every detail and possibility with the upmost compassion and respect! Unlike other doctors, he visits his patients at home and always responds quickly to their calls! He saw a need in the Hospice industry and he did something about it! I cannot say enough good about the staff and Dr. Gunuganti. God bless him and his staff.
Respectfully,

I am very impressed with the quality of care that I have received from my Guiding Light Team. Amy, Gracie, Terry, Sara and Father Josh are truly outstanding and caring professionals. Dr. VJ should be very proud of them! I love them all!!!

The owner is Dr. Vijay Gunuganti. He is a doctor with Texas Oncology of South Texas. He doesn't tell his patients that he owns Guiding Light Hospice. If his patients need hospice and their care will be expensive he sends them to another hospice. He tries to keep case managers at our hospital from helping his patients choose a hospice other than the one he owns.
He should disclose his ownership to his patients and let them choose based on what they want.
