In mid-December, Tia applied and then agreed to take a position tutoring my 9th grade daughter, after a week of chat messages between us here on Care.com to work out the details. The start date, days she would come and the rate were all agreed upon by us both. She didn't have a rate in mind and asked me to offer one. The rate offered was the one on her profile page, which she immediately agreed to. Then, when the new year was upon us, I sent a message to Tia on January 6 asking her to just confirm her start date of January 10, the same date we had agreed upon. Message was read but no response. Figuring she might have somehow not actually my message, I sent another on January 9 to make sure she was coming the next day. Again read, but no response. After the no show the next day and no reply, I sent another message saying that if something came up or she changed her mind, I would have appreciated the courtesy of her letting me know and again asked if she was still on board and could staff the next agreed upon day. Message was again read by her, but no response. I finally got a response on January 12 simply stating that, contrary to her telling me "her schedule was completely open" after the holidays, she had another job and could no longer work the agreed upon two days of the week (didn't ask about coming other days which would have been fine), and then stated that the rate she previously agreed upon (and listed on her profile) "would not be adequate". However, she never even tried to negotiate for more. I responded I was upset that she knew I wanted her to start right away and she simply chose not to reply and that had she asked for more money, I would have gladly complied to secure her services. As a result, I lost a month in the process of finding someone and starting the much-needed tutoring. A week since I sent that message, still no response. Could not have been handled any more unprofessionally.
