I graduated in May from Columbia University, jumping straight into spending the majority of my time teaching math and computer science/literacy. I have since been doing computer science education work at codingKIDZ and 1-on-1 and group tutoring work at Mathnasium of Park Slope, becoming a lead instructor in only a few months. I know how to teach math - on several occasions, parents have asked me what my work schedule was to book appointments with me specifically.
When working on math, it is important to me that the student is both in command of and retaining what they are learning. I try to do this by doing as little show and tell and as much playful Socratic questioning as possible. The student holds the pencil as much as possible, taking notes and solving problems. That way, when I leave, the student can look back at what we did, written in their own words, so that they can work on their own and not end up only doing math when I am around.
