I volunteer with a program at the University of Delaware. Every Monday night, I meet with several children with a variety of special needs such as cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, several forms of autism, and behavioral and social disorders. Stations are set up throughout the gym displaying indoor physical and fun activities such as floor hockey, volleyball, and tumbling. I teach children how to play different sports and play alongside them as they develop their skills, learn to play with other children, and most importantly, have fun! In addition to my experience with children with several disabilities, I also have experience with children with diabetes. My brother was diagnosed with the disease at the age of six. As both his oldest sister and his babysitter, I learned how to help him manage his diet and blood sugar levels when I was about 12. I have experience checking blood sugars (and knowing when glucose levels are abnormal), measuring and administering insulin shots, correcting glucose levels, and handling insulin pumps.
