I have been caring for others as far back as I can remember. As a youth, my parents charged me to care for my younger sibling and cousins as the adults left for work or on short trips. As a young adult, I assisted my mother in caring for my grandmother. My grandmother was disabled but cooking for her, bathing her, grooming her and dressing her came natural to me. I would often accompany my grandmother and mother on errands and outings to make sure they were cared for and safe. I was often a companion on many occasions and enjoyed our valuable time together. We all deserve best life experiences and because you are aging does not mean your best life should come to a halt. I later found myself caring for my aging father whose health started deteriorating physically and mentally. I was caring for a parent with Alzheimer and faced with the challenges of becoming a 24-hours a day and seven days a week.
