I was once a care taker/tutor for a wonderful teenager who has severe autism. My duties included getting her off the bus when she got home from school, preparing a snack/meal and working with her to help reach her IEP goals for the school year. I took what I have learned from my education classes and adapted those things to specifically meet the unique learning needs and sensory issues of the teenager I was caring for. I have a passion for sitting and caring for those with special needs. Working with children and adults with autism and developmental disabilities has taught me how to adapt to different situations. I have learned that not everyone is the same and even though these children and adults have a disability they have the most love to give to anyone. Caring for those with special needs has helped to teach me patience and has helped me grow as an individual.

Every day that Jennifer worked with my daughter she brought to the table patience, dedication, creativity, and adaptability. Tutoring an autistic child includes all of the challenges of teaching in general, compounded by a number of factors unique to that child due to their special needs. What works one day, or even one hour, may not work at all the next. Jennifer did an amazing job at applying what she was learning in her education program, and yet adapting those things specifically to Sammy with her unique learning style and sensory issues. Jennifer did an amazing job at striking the balance between stretching Sammy as far as possible and recognizing when Sammy had maxed out and was in need of redirection/calming. Jennifer also demonstrated the ability to independently set up (and evolve as needed) a program for Sammy which both reinforced and complemented her IEP goals from school. I could not be more thankful for the time Sammy had with Jennifer as her tutor - Jennifer is an amazing and gifted woman!
