In 2001 I was hired as a paraprofessional to work with multi handicapped kids in a life skills room. The students I worked with have a range of different disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. I have worked with kids who use walkers and wheelchairs daily. My job description was to play all sorts of games, help them to color and to help with their school work. We would have music time, gym time and arts and crafts. I also help them with their bathroom duties. I would also prepare their breakfast, snack and lunches. I was also the bus monitor making sure they got to and from school safely. I have been around special needs most of my life. My 2 oldest nephews had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, they both passed away from this disease. When I work with the special needs it melts my heart to see them react when they do something right for the first time. I honestly believe that being around them makes me a better person , they teach me as well as I teach them. I am at my happiest when I am working with special needs. I have done it for so long that I feel that it is what I am really good at. I do not see myself doing anything else but working in this area of work.
