I worked with a child with special needs when I was 16 in Ridgefield CT. He was born with Down syndrome, and had a very hard time for the first years of his life. I worked with the parents in feeding him through a tube in his stomach as well as teaching him how to do things on his own. Simple things as well like building blocks and readying are other things that I worked with him on. I have also worked with children who have learning disabilities. I work with them to help them read, work through the words and understand what they read. My mother was a first grade teacher for 30+ years, so I learned most of this kind of work from her. While working at the Boys and Girls Club of Ridgefield, we had two children about 12 and 13 who are autistic. I worked with these two children to fit in and to have as much fun as possible even though they generally felt "different" I worked with them and the other kids to help them make the best of their time at the Club. I have worked with many children with ADD and ADHD. I worked with a foster mother for a summer in Atlanta, GA. Her son had very severe ADHD, and I helped work with him to stay calm and focus on the tasks at hand. For several months I worked with a 3-year-old who had a several peanut allergy. My mother is allergic to bees so I have experience with an EpiPen. I was trained on how to use one of these at YMCA Camp Fuller in Wakefield RI, as this was a sleep away camp and we had to administer the pen if needed.
