Over the course of my life I have been blessed to care for several special needs children and adults. I have one handicap uncle that was in a car accident when I was very young and have helped my grandma care for him most of my life. From years of helping my grandma I developed a huge respect for disabled people and always sought out to help them even if it was as simple as opening the door at the grocery store. In college I was looking for a job and I came across a wonderful family with a daughter that had Retts syndrome. I started caring for her and worked for their family for two years. This job required me to feed the child through a feeding tube, bathe her, and take care of other needs that she could not. I developed a bond with this child as I saw her struggles and rejoiced with her even when she made little strides such as sitting up on her own. I just knew the work it took for her to do such an act we all take for granted. Special needs children especially have a place in my heart and I get such joy out of working with them.
