We hired Nicole as a full-time nanny for our two children (2.5yo & 1yo) shortly after relocating to North Carolina. Within the first couple days, we had serious questions about whether it was going to be a good fit as she seemed to lack the experience of our previous full-time nanny. Regardless, we wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. She worked only (7) total days in a 12-day employment period. After a very short (and inconsistent) time with us, she abruptly put in her resignation via text message, stating she would work a 2-week notice period. No discussion with us face-to-face or via phone. Never mind she had just signed a contract with us stating she would provide at least (30) days’ notice. Although we also believed it was not a good fit, we were a bit surprised and kindly asked for feedback as to why she was resigning. She cited it was due to our 2.5yo son, who she felt was not “adapting to her” and creating a “frustrating environment”. Again, she was with him for 7 sporadic days, in total. She went so far as to call him “aggressive”, an adjective our previous nanny of 2.5yrs never used to describe him, nor the babysitter we had fill in while she was off, nor anyone else in his life. It was abundantly clear she did not understand or have patience for the ‘big emotions’ that 2yo olds can have, or separation anxiety they can experience after major changes like loss of family and friends, new house, new city, new nanny, and new routine. It also seemed she had unrealistic expectations about how quickly a young toddler should “adapt” to her. The Monday after putting in her notice she simply didn’t show up. When we tried calling, she did not answer and instead sent a text with an absurd excuse that she was unclear on working the notice period. We found it quite silly, as we never discussed her not working the next 2 weeks while we found alternative childcare. A quick and simple text message to clear up any confusion would have been more than sufficient. When she had a question about payday, she had no problem sending a quick text for confirmation then. Choosing to no-show without any notice clearly indicated she was not only incredibly unprofessional and immature, but very discourteous. She didn’t express the slightest concern or remorse about leaving us in a bind with childcare. We had to scramble to reschedule important work meetings and request PTO quickly. We knew if she was quitting after only 7 working days there was very little chance she would work the full 2-week notice period, but we didn’t anticipate she would no-show on day one. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, especially full-time working parents who are already juggling a lot. Nicole's lack of professionalism, maturity, and impertinence in handling our children and her resignation was inexcusable, and we asked her not to return. We would never have Nicole around our children or in our home again. I would advise anyone considering hiring her not to be fooled by one good reference and request more, as I wish we would have.
