When I was young, my baby brother acquired a brain injury, which led me into the love of caregiving for those with special needs. For the last 20 years, I raised, and home schooled my two children. During those years, I also helped take care of my husband's grandmother and my father through their battle with cancer, and through hospice care. I also was the main caregiver for my mother during her 8 months of chemotherapy, taking her to appointments, grocery shopping and just being with her to support her any way that I could. My most treasured care giving job was for woman who had moderate to severe dementia. We spent every afternoon having tea and singing, aside from all the other things to care for her. When it was no longer safe to have her in the home and she had to be put in a nursing home, I continued to visit her, volunteering my time because I missed her. This job taught me a new level of patience, understanding and compassion and made me realize my true calling.

As Michele's mother, I have personally observed and experienced her compassion and giving heart. Michele has a brother with special needs. When growing up, she was very kind and protective of him, at times, putting his needs before hers. In 2009 when Michele's father was bedridden with stage 4 cancer, she assisted with his care. She was very comfortable and competent with his care. In 2012, I was experiencing the debilitating effects of a Hepatitis C treatment. Initially, Michele assisted by picking up groceries, prescriptions & transporting me to medical appointments. As the side effects of the treatment increased, it became more difficult for me to care for myself. Michele's commitment to my care also increased. She lived with me off and on over a period of 9 months until I got my strength back and could again care for myself. I will always be grateful for the time, energy and loving compassion she provided to me. I can not think of anyone who is more suited to care giving than Michele. She is a "natural." She has a genuine nurturing spirit that can't be taught. It is just who she is. She truly cares for others.
