I was a Special Education teacher for the severely handicapped population for 22 years. I worked with students from the ages of 10 through 22. I worked closely with my students' families to reshape behaviors. We started transitioning from PECS to iPads to teach communication skills and recognition of emotions and body language. I started our Jr. High program from scratch and added a vocational training program for our high school program. I also developed a modified P.E. program for my students. I mainstreamed my students as much as possible. I tailored their IEP's to meet their individual needs. I am working with the developmentally disabled has been my passion. I knew when I was getting my Masters in Special Education that working with the severely handicapped was the path that I should choose and I have never regretted my decision. The majority of my students fell on the autism spectrum and I was always able to build a rapport with them. My students and their families trusted me to be their teacher and their consultant.
