My experience with special needs began 12 years ago when I started helping my cousin with her daughter who suffered from Rett Syndrome. S was able to sit up at that time but eventually became bedridden. She seemed healthy when she was born but at year one, she stopped speaking and was unable to hold onto things and started wringing her hands. I would go help her mother by feeding her through her stomach tube, burping her through her stomach tube, bathing and changing her diapers, cleaning her bedding, and entertaining her. She also had severe diabetes so I would check her sugar and give her insulin as needed. Sadly, V died two years ago at the age of 18. I have babysat for a special needs 3-year-old boy as well and while substituting I would run elementary special needs classrooms with children on the autism spectrum, down syndrome, etc. I also subbed for teenagers with special needs in middle school. My husband is an 8th grade SPED and math teacher.

Heather worked with our daughter, S, for several years. S had Rett Syndrome which caused multiple, profound physical disabilities, so she was dependent on caregivers for all of her care. Heather would go above and beyond, not just in caring for what S required, but also in what she needed... to be loved and understood. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a caregiver for their child with Special Needs!
