I started working in elderly care in 2021 after a long history of childcare and admin-related work. My mother was a caretaker my whole childhood, and also assisted with a care plan for my grandmother, so my exposure has been high though my formal experience is limited. I've been serving a family in Winston-Salem since June of 2021, caring for a dementia patient as an in-home care provider. In the beginning months, she was primarily non-verbal following a severe case of shingles and needed heavy care: bathing, bathroom assistance, feeding, etc. Since then, her recovery has been phenomenal and we have been able to integrate taking afternoon walks, practicing sight words, and folding laundry into her care plan. I am thrilled by her progress! I administer her medications, engage in soothing activities for her anxiety (such as hand massages and painting nails), and generally function as her companion to ease her mind. I also oversee admin work for her husband and run errands regularly.
