My grandparents were the most pivotal part of my life growing up, and it was a shock when suddenly one day, I went from being driven to school by them to driving them to doctor's appointments, taking over cleaning and cooking duties in the house, and helping them remember to take medications, attend social engagements, and so on. While I was never formally paid to care for them, for for 9 years after my grandfather's dementia symptoms began until his death during the pandemic, I lived with and cared for my grandparents. They lived well into their 90's and I was fortunate to spend so much time with them, helping them continue to have a modicum of autonomy, self-respect, and sense of self that putting them in hospice or having a home caregiver would not have provided.
